Northeastern’s Sigma Xi Chapter Recognized for Excellence
Northeastern University’s student chapter of Sigma Xi, The International Scientific Research Honor Society, was recognized as a 2024 Student Chapter of Excellence. The group also received a Chapter Program of Excellence Award for its Research Immerse Program.

Acorn Grant Awarded for Research on Plant Production of Chemotherapy Drugs
ChE Associate Professor Carolyn Lee-Parsons and Postdoctoral Research Associate Lauren Cole-Osborn were awarded a 2025 Acorn Innovation Grant (Acorn Award) from MassVentures for their project, “Elite CRISPR-Edited Periwinkle Plants for Production of Chemotherapeutics.”

Amiji Elected AAAS Fellow
Bouvé/ChE University Distinguished Professor Mansoor Amiji was elected as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) 2024 Fellow in the Pharmaceutical Sciences section for distinguished contributions in pharmaceutical sciences with a specific focus on targeted drug delivery for a variety of diseases including cancer, inflammatory diseases, and CNS diseases.

Northeastern’s National Academy of Inventors (NAI) chapter, honored ECE University Distinguished and William Lincoln Smith Professor Vincent Harris with the Innovation Impact Award; Justin Hayes, PhD’25, chemical engineering, with the Student Innovation Impact Award; and BioE Assistant Research Professor Saeed Amal with the Emerging Visionary Award, for their significant contributions to innovation, particularly in AI-driven healthcare.

ChE PhD Student’s Research Featured on Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics Cover
Colin Gallagher, PhD’27, chemical engineering, co-authored a paper with ChE Assistant Professor Qing Zhao titled “Graphene-Based Single-Atom Catalysts for Electrochemical CO₂ Reduction: Unraveling the Roles of Metals and Dopants in Tuning Activity,” which was featured as the cover art of Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics.

Neural Stem Cell Research Discovery Could Counteract Brain Aging
ChE Professor and Chair Rebecca Willits’ research on “Mechanotransductive N-Cadherin Binding Induces Differentiation in Human Neural Stem Cells” was published in Mechanobiology in Medicine. The research discovered that a protein in the human brain could potentially be used to grow new neurons in the lab and enhance brain processes affected by aging or neurodegenerative diseases.
