Honoring a Legacy: Professor Ron Willey’s 40 Years of Excellence at Northeastern

After an illustrious 40-year career at Northeastern University, Professor Ron Willey retired in October 2023, marking the end of an era characterized by unwavering dedication, exemplary service, and numerous accolades.

Professor Willey’s academic journey began with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire in 1974. He furthered his expertise with a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1984, laying the foundation for a remarkable career in academia.

A Trailblazer in Chemical Engineering
Professor Willey’s impact extended far beyond the classroom. His contributions were recognized with the prestigious Norton H. Walton/Russell L. Miller Award in Safety/Loss Prevention in 2013. This award acknowledged his outstanding achievements and contributions to chemical engineering, particularly in the critical areas of loss prevention, safety, and health.

Exemplary Faculty Service
In 2019-2020, Professor Willey received the Outstanding Faculty Service Award from the College of Engineering, a testament to his commitment to advancing the university’s academic mission.

Shaping the Future of Chemical Engineering Education
Professor Willey’s dedication to safety and education was further exemplified by the Gary Leach Recognition Awards in 2011, 2007, and 2006. These accolades recognized his pivotal role in integrating process safety and hazard recognition into the chemical engineering curriculum and accreditation requirements, as well as his contributions to the improvement of safety in the Chem-E-Car Competition.

A Leader and Mentor
The ASEE New England Section Award for Section Outstanding Leader in 2004 highlighted his exceptional leadership within the academic community.

Professor Ron Willey’s impact was not only recognized locally but also nationally, as evident in his receipt of the Omega Xi Epsilon Award for Best Professor in 2011, 2010, 2004, and 2001.
