Professor Willey’s academic journey began with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire in 1974. He furthered his expertise with a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1984, laying the foundation for a remarkable career in academia.

Professor Willey’s impact extended far beyond the classroom. His contributions were recognized with the prestigious Norton H. Walton/Russell L. Miller Award in Safety/Loss Prevention in 2013. Professor Willey’s dedication to safety and education was further exemplified by the Gary Leach Recognition Awards in 2011, 2007, and 2006. These accolades recognized his pivotal role in integrating process safety and hazard recognition into the chemical engineering curriculum and accreditation requirements, as well as his contributions to the improvement of safety in the Chem-E-Car Competition.
