NSF CAREER Award to Understand How the Nervous System Regulates Gut Inflammation
Assistant Professor Abigail Koppes, chemical engineering, received a $500K NSF CAREER Award, titled “Defining the Regulators of Enteric Plasticity in Engineered Microfluidic Environments.” Her research focuses on developing new, non-invasive methods of exploring human cellular responses to biological signals. She and her team are developing plastic, disposable handheld devices that expose engineered tissue to a range of signals, then measure its response.

Two COE Students Awarded Goldwater Scholarships
Cameron Young, E’22, chemical engineering and biochemistry, and Spencer Lake Jacobs-Skolik, E’22, electrical engineering, were awarded the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship, the United States’ premier award for outstanding young researchers in STEM fields.

ChE/COS Associate Professor Carolyn Lee-Parsons and BioE Affiliated Faculty member Erin Cram were awarded an $800K NSF grant for creating ” A Novel CRISPR SynBio Tool for Investigating and Reprogramming the Regulation of Alkaloid Biosynthesis in Catharanthus roseus.”
