Carrier Receives Honorable Mention at 3-D ROC
ChE Professor Rebecca Carrier received an honorable mention during the National Eye Institute (NEI) 3-D Retina Organoid Challenge (3-D ROC). Carrier’s team created an organoid-microvessel co-culture system that proposes to add vasculature embedded in a biomimetic hydrogel to organoids to increase oxygen and nutrient flow and mimic the chemical and physical cues present in developing eye tissue.

Combating Chemotherapy Drug Shortages With Plant Engineering
ChE/COS Associate Professor Carolyn Lee-Parsons is developing methods to produce more plant-derived chemotherapeutic compounds to meet drug shortages. She received a Spark Fund award from Northeastern’s Center for Research Innovation for this work.

NSF CAREER Award for Examining Flow of Polymer Gels in Confined Spaces
ChE Assistant Professor Sara Hashmi was awarded a $550,000 NSF CAREER award for “In Situ Polymer Gelation in Confined Flows” to examine how polymer gels flow through tight spaces to better predict clogging behavior such as blood flow through a vessel.

$3M NIH Award for New Treatments for Pancreatic Cancer
Bouve/ChE University Distinguished Professor Mansoor Amiji is working with UC Davis and drug developer TargaGenix to create new treatments for pancreatic cancer. The researchers received a $3 million five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to work on mouse efficacy and safety trials at Northeastern for the next three years.

The College of Engineering celebrated National Engineers Week with events including a ‘Break the Mold’ Fireside Chat with award-winning engineer and commentator Dr. Shini Somara and Dean Gregory Abowd; Cookies with the Dean event, which included snacks, photo and video booths, COE swag and a lot of COE pride; Breakout sessions with Shini Somara with select students and faculty showing our progressive engineering program, research, and community; and an Engineering for Everyone Expo hosted by the Center for STEM Education.

Landherr Receives AIChE Grant To Create Comic Learning Tool
Chemical Engineering Distinguished Teaching Professor Lucas Landherr has received a grant from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Foundation to create a comic learning tool for high school seniors and first-year college engineering students.
