ChE Student Headed to Nation’s Cup!

Chemical Engineering student Kirsty Haley is heading to the Figure Skating World Championship (Nation’s Cup) in April!

Kirsty Haley is a second year Chemical Engineering student with a minor in Business Administration. She skates both on the Northeastern Club figure skating team and for The Skating Club of Boston’s Adult Theatre on Ice team. Outside of skating, she works in the NU Center for Student Involvement Programming Lab, is a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, and is currently applying for Co-ops this semester.

Kirsty got her start in team figure skating in 7th grade because her mom grew up figure skating. “She helped to teach me how to figure skate, and now many members of my family are involved in figure skating and theatre on ice” states Kirsty. She started out on the Novice and Open level teams and had great experiences being on a team, competing, traveling to Nationals, and even coming home with a National medal some years.

Then, in her senior year of high school, she tried out for the Senior level team that was headed to the World Championship (called Nation’s cup), and just missed out by one skater. Instead, she was placed on the Junior level team. So this year, Kirsty was extremely excited when she heard that there was another opportunity to compete internationally at Nation’s Cup. She auditioned for the adult team and earned one of the few open spots on the team, securing her place to travel to France and compete.

Congratulations Kirsty!

Theatre on Ice is an interdisciplinary form of figure skating that uses skating and acting to tell a story. The teams consist of 24 skaters that skate two programs: a short and a long. The short program is 2.5 minutes and has elements that the teams need to complete in order to place well. This season the elements are cultural dance, percussive movements, and mirroring. The long program is more open-ended, and it is designed to use 4.5 minutes of skating to tell a story. This year, Kirsty’s team is doing a funny story is about dueling composers – one is trying to ruin the show and one is trying to save the show.
